A Middletown mother in need of a second liver transplant is hoping to raise thousands of dollars for her prospective donor who she said will also have an extensive recovery.
Katherine Figueroa is on a national transplant list and receives state HUSKY Medicaid insurance, but she isn’t sure how much of her surgery or the donor’s will be covered.
That’s why she created a crowdsourcing campaign to raise $30,000.
"We're just hoping to get a live donor, the perfect match as soon as possible before I get too sick and my liver stops functioning completely,” Figueroa said. "They're going to have to be out of work for recovery after for two entire months and everyone has a life, has bills and things they need to pay for."
The mother of a 2-year-old said she’s in the early stages of liver failure.
At 25, Figueroa is in need of another liver transplant. She had her first one at 9 years old.
"That would explain my skin yellow, my eyes yellow. That means my liver is getting worse within time,” Figueroa said.
She said she is anxious to match with a live donor and she, family and friends have offered to begin the testing process.
"It's amazing to have anyone say it, like really amazing to the point where I'm at a loss for words,” Figueroa said.
While her mind occasionally wanders to some dark places, like wondering if the surgery will go well, she believes there is a light at the end.
“I've just been through so much that I feel like this is just one more thing I need to go through, just to kind of prove that I can do it,” Figueroa said.
