There were a number of Mother’s Day nominations from viewers this week, and the Liberty Bank Channel 3 SurPRIZE Squad chose not just a mother to surprise, but a woman who is also a teacher.
This week is National Teacher Appreciation week, so the SurPRIZE Squad delivered double the surprise.
Retired teacher Dot Williams submitted a nomination to the squad, who then took a trip to Bristol’s Hubbell Elementary School to surprise first grade teacher and mother of two Kristin Ortolani.
“She's an inspiration to us every day...and we're her team and we are here for every day in her fight with her illness,” said Principal Rochelle Schwartz.
Ortolani is not only a strong force in the classroom, but also in her personal life as she battles breast cancer for a second time.
“Kristin has an unbelievable outlook on life. Things can be so-not-going-her way and she still comes to work with a smile on her face,” said first grade teacher Alicia Dehey.
In January, she took a leave of absence from work as she underwent a more aggressive chemotherapy treatment.
But this week was her first full week back.
“We're so happy. We've missed her,” Schwartz said.
The Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad couldn’t wait to make this week more special for her.
“I had no idea, this is not what I was told,” Ortolani said. “I was told that there was going to be a pet program for the kids and this is very, very surprising and unexpected.”
The squad presented her with several unexpected gifts, like spending money she could use on herself, and a special family outing with dinner and a musical.
