UConn says almost 36,000 students applied to be admitted to the school this fall, setting a new record.

The more than 35,900 applicants were competing for about 3,800 spots at the main campus in Storrs and about 1,400 at the Hartford, Stamford, Waterbury and Avery Point campuses.

The university says it receive applications from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and 109 countries. About 12,500 came from Connecticut.

The school accepts applications until July 1 for the regional campuses.

UConn says the average SAT score of this year's applicants is 4 points higher than last year's.
