A police officer was able to save a person from an alleged suicide attempt on a bridge in Hamden early Sunday morning.
Officer Eric Hallstrom noticed a group of people standing on the Whitney Avenue overpass around 3:15 a.m. Police said a New Haven County resident, who is in his early 20’s, “was attempting to jump off of the bridge.”
Hallstrom attempted to detain the person, however they struggled with the officer. During the struggle, police said the person was “making suicidal threats.”
After a struggle that lasted “several minutes,” the officer was able to “secure” the person before calling for help.
Police said the person was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for “an emergency psychiatric and medical evaluation.”
