NORWICH, CT (WFSB) -

The Hartford Yard Goats played their first baseball game in Connecticut on Thursday, though not in the capital city.

The former New Britain Rock Cats franchise played at Dodd Stadium in Norwich while crews in Hartford rush to complete the team's new Dunkin' Donuts stadium.

The Eastern League announced last week that the team would play nine games in Connecticut this month so players could take a break from a strenuous road schedule.

Thursday's 6:05 p.m. game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats was the first. New Hampshire will be in town for four games through Sunday.

The stadium wasn't very packed on Thursday evening in Norwich, but fans said they are still excited.

“We’ve been waiting for them. All year they’ve been the 'Road Goats' and now they’re finally back in Connecticut," said Tom Kabara of Moodus.

Eyewitness News reached out to the Yard Goats organization to find out how much they are paying to rent Dodd Stadium and the exact attendance on Thursday night but they didn't have that information available yet.

Games versus the Akron Rubber Ducks and the Bowie BaySox are also on the schedule to fill out the month.

Tickets are available here.

Dodd Stadium is home to the Connecticut Tigers. Their season doesn't start until June.

The Yard Goats were forced to reschedule their first 17 home games because of stadium construction delays. The facility was supposed to be ready in April, but was pushed back to May 17 with the first game set for May 31.

However, the Hartford Stadium Authority expressed concerns that even those dates may not be met.

Hartford is tied with Akron for the best record in the Eastern League at 23 - 9. The two teams play each other in Norwich on Monday.
