NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Coast Guard crews halted their search for a missing kayaker when the man notified officials that he was safe on shore.

Officials said the man was taking on water in his kayak, abandoned it, then swam to shore.

Coast Guard crews spent Sunday afternoon searching Long Island Sound after a Good Samaritan spotted an empty kayak in the water.

Crews treated the search as if there is a missing kayaker, even though it was unclear at the time if there was anyone lost in the water.

On Sunday afternoon, a few people who were fishing in the area of Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven saw an empty lime-green kayak was ashore.

Inside the kayak was a fishing pole, along with bait, and a fresh catch.

The Coast Guard, along with New Haven and West Haven fire departments, began searching the area immediately.

The high winds and choppy water didn’t help make the search any easier.

The Coast Guard used multiple boats as well as an aircraft in the search.
