New Haven police are investigating after a woman was struck and killed by a car late Thursday night.
According to police, 29-year-old Keyonia Jenkins of New Haven was killed when she walked into the path on a car on Kossuth Street near Ann Street around 11:30 p.m.
Witnesses told police that the vehicle was a burgundy-colored mini-van. The van was last seen fleeing to Congress Avenue. Jenkins was rushed by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, she died.
"The family is taking it hard right now. She was a nice, sweet person, lot of friends," said Regina Bell, who is Jenkins' aunt.
Bell said Jenkins leaves behind a son who now must grow up without a mother.
"Please turn yourself in, that was the wrong thing to do, that was my niece, she doesn't deserve that," Bell said.
Crash team officers and detectives remained at the scene on Friday morning to investigate.
The driver remains at large and has not been described.
The vehicle was damaged and evidence left at the scene is being recovered for examination, according to investigators.
Anyone with information is asked to call New Haven police at 203-946-6316.
