HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

A retired Hamden police K9 has passed away at the age of 14 years old.

The dog, Cesare, served beside now-retired Officer John Battick from 2003 to 2012.

In a Facebook post, Hamden police said a highlight of Cesare's career was in 2007 when he helped with a drug investigation that led to the seizure of 13 kilograms of heroin.

“I was deeply saddened when I received the news today that K-9 Cesare had passed. K-9 Cesare served a proud and distinguished career with the Hamden Police Department and will be greatly missed by everyone in the community. K-9 Cesare was a loyal and fearless partner that was always willing to go into harm’s way, so that a human officer could remain safe. I’m proud and thankful to have served alongside him.” Lieutenant Frank McDermott, Supervisor K-9 Unit.
