STONINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A man operating a motorized electric chair was injured after being hit by a motor vehicle in the Pawcatuck section of Stonington on Wednesday morning.

The person was struck on Route 1, which is known as South Broad Street, by a car headed eastbound shortly after 10 a.m.

The woman driving the vehicle stopped at the scene and is cooperating with police.

Stonington Police Captain Todd Olsen said an accident reconstruction team was on the scene and assisting the Stonington Police Department in the investigation.

"There was debris from the accident all over the travel portion of the roadway. We are currently assessing all of the evidence," Olsen said.

The man was taken by Life Star medical helicopter to Rhode Island hospital in Providence. The helicopter landed at the local middle school, which they had to temporarily lock down to keep the students inside while the accident victim was transported.

Police did not know the condition of the man.

Route 1 was closed at Mayflower Avenue. Police are asking drivers to seek alternative routes.
