TORRINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

The rainy weather didn't affect the turnout for the Memorial Day parade in Torrington.

While many parades were canceled across the state due to the showers, organizers in Torrington said standing in a little rain is nothing compared to the sacrifices our fallen service members made for our freedom.

"It's for the veterans," said Susan Pagel of Torrington. "It's for everybody that serves our country."

The parade began at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Coe Memorial Park.

Dozens of umbrellas dotted either side of Main Street.

"It's a wonderful thing for Torrington, to have community spirit and to come together at times like these," said Joanna Catalfo of Torrington.

Many said a little rain wasn't going to keep them away.

"Our soldiers also died in the rain so why not come out and remember their sacrifice," said Elaine Pelizzari of Winsted.

Several cities and towns made the call on Sunday and Monday morning to cancel their parades.

Still, several parade goers said it was a pleasure to come out and support the organizations, veterans and volunteers.

"We're here to support Girl Scouts, to support the veterans and to support Torrington," Catalfo said.

"I'm really happy to see my sister marching for a last year in the middle school," said Neela Manegal of Torrington.

It was the only parade in Torrington all year, according to Bob Hunter who serves as the parade’s marshal.

Hunter said the parade route was 2.1 miles long, making it one of the longest in the state.

“It's the same route that was taken when the U.S. won WWI, that came back victorious, so we call it the victory lap," Hunter said.

Organizers said they would have only canceled if there was a threat of thunder and lightning.

"I know that it translates well to the civilian population to see us out there," Hunter said. "But to know why, I think, to know why we do this is important and we have to do this to make sure people don't forget."
