On Monday morning, a dead dog was found inside a covered crate on a New Haven sidewalk.
Police said they were called to Blake Street where the dog was found, along with bagged leaves and trash, left for collection by city sanitation workers.
People who live on Blake Street have buried their beloved animals in a small pet cemetery in the area. Neighbors are wondering why someone would leave a dead dog on the curb.
"I think that people like that should be locked up," said Corrin Knight.
The dog is a small white “lap dog” with no noticeable signs of trauma, police said.
"If I had them in front of me I would say 'why would you do this, what was your purpose,'" Knight said.
Neighbors said the animal looked like a Bichon Frise. Seven-year-old Aiyana Colon said she used to see the dog walking around the neighborhood.
"It used to walk around. It used to play with my neighbors old dog," Aiyana said.
Neighbors believe the person who did this should come forward.
“It's likely the case of someone whose pet died and they didn't know how to properly deal with the situation - perhaps someone elderly,” said District Patrol Sergeant Steven Teague.
People on Blake Street are glad someone called police because kids walk by the place where the dog was dumped every day. Even thought the dog is gone, Aiyana worries about nightmares and can't believe someone could be so cruel.
"It's kind of freaky and scary because I like dogs so it's kind of really scary to me," Aiyana said.
Police are trying to locate the owner of the home the dog was in front of. Police said the home is locked up tight.
While an investigation continues, police said there isn’t necessarily any criminal wrongdoing.
