HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

A man was arrested for stabbing a woman at a Walmart in Hamden, according to police.

Officers said Nathaniel Williams, 68, of New Haven, was identified as the suspect.

Police said they responded to the store on Dixwell Avenue around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

When they arrived they found a 62-year-old Hamden woman lying on the ground near the cash registers. They said she was suffering from a stab wound to the chest.

The victim was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment. Her condition was not known as of Wednesday morning.

Williams was taken into custody while standing in front of the store.

Police said they learned that Williams and the victim knew each other.

He was charged with first-degree assault and breach of peace.

Police said he was detained on a $50,000 bond and scheduled to face a judge in Meriden Wednesday.
