UCONN men’s basketball coach, Kevin Ollie cut the ribbon to his new wheelchair accessible basketball court on Monday calling today “A Day of Inclusivity.”
Dubbed Kevin’s Kourt’s, the court offers 10 basketball hoops and a list of specially designed rules for play.
Ollie drew on inspiration from some of the strongest people he knew when designing the court and remarked, “to see those wonderful children and the wonderful players and adults still living with some setbacks but letting those setbacks be a setup for an even bigger comeback is very important, and they're teaching me a life lesson as too.”
Coach Ollie said he wanted to help these inspiring athletes with disabilities by creating a place where kids of all ages have a shot to play and excel.
“This takes the place of any national championship that I could possibly have, like I said with the birth of my kids and this is probably one of the highlights of my life,” said Ollie.
Private donations funded the entire project and soon Ollie said he pledges that more of these courts will spread throughout the state.
“I hope this changes people's point of view on people in wheel chairs because we're all equal,” said Ollie.
