Two Connecticut universities rank among the highest for the number of sexual assaults reported.
According to a federal report from the U.S. Department of Education, the University of Connecticut in Storrs was the highest and Wesleyan University in Middletown was third.
The study, which was analyzed by the Washington Post, examined reports of sexual assault on hundreds of campuses. Experts said while more students are coming forward, the crimes remain under-reported.
Researchers looked at more than 1,300 schools with at least 1,000 students.
The study showed UConn, which has about 26,000 students, tied with Brown University for the highest total at 43 in 2014.
UConn said it has taken a proactive approach to increase training among employees and students in reporting incidents.
Meanwhile, Wesleyan, which has about 3,000 undergraduates, had 37 cases of sexual assault reported in 2014. It also had the highest number of reports per 1,000 students.
It is important to note that the numbers only reflect the reported sex assaults and do not reflect the cases that have gone through the criminal court system.
