A suspected shoplifter who fought a clerk on his way out of a store faces charges following a confrontation in West Haven.

Police said 35-year-old Mark Shaw went into the Campbell Package Store on Campbell Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The clerk told police that Shaw was seen paying for one item, but was also trying to steal beer at the same time.

"He grabbed two cans, went to the side, put one in his pocket. I see it bulging out of his pocket, didn't say anything to him at first, just told my cousin to watch him," said Nrupen Patel, of the Cambell Package Store. He said he was in the store with his brother and cousin.

The clerk caught Shaw outside of the store.

"When he was walking out we confronted him about it, he just went off, started picking up the sign, started swinging, he hit my cousin with the sign," Patel said.

The suspect began to fight. Police said he picked up an advertisement sign and struck the clerk with it.

Shaw fled, but not before police put out a bulletin about him. He was located.

After a brief struggle, police said he was arrested and charged with robbery, larceny, breach of peace and criminal mischief.

The owners of the store said all the customer had to do was admit he took the beer and they would have told him to keep it and never come back.

The big issue, the owners said, is much more than the beer because to get the door replaced will cost hundreds of dollars.
