WINCHESTER, CT (WFSB) -

A driver is in critical condition after being rescued from a crash moments before the car burst into flames.

The Department of Transportation said it had to close Route 8 between Route 20 and Deer Hill Road on the portion of the road known as Colebrook River Road.

It has since reopened.

Winchester police said the crash happened shortly after 1 a.m.

They said the vehicle, a 1997 Honda Civic, veered off the road and struck a utility pole on the southbound side of the road.

The driver was pulled from the car by a passing motorist moments before it erupted in flames.

The driver was brought to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital by an ambulance then flown to Hartford Hospital by the Life Star emergency helicopter. Police listed the driver in critical condition.

The name of the person is not being released.

The cause remains under investigation.
