EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

East Hartford police are investigating a double shooting that left a man dead and a pregnant woman fighting for her life.

According to police, officers were called to an apartment in the Summerfield Townhouses on Plain Drive shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Friday.

Police said the victims were shot multiple times. The man, 21, was killed.

Eyewitness News learned that the second victim of the shooting was a 23-year-old pregnant woman. She remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Police would not say how far along she is.

Also in the apartment was a 4-year-old boy and another woman; however, neither was hurt.

Police said the victims did not shoot each other. They said they were attacked. There was also no history of officers being called to the apartment.

They called the incident the town's fourth homicide of the year.

Plain Drive was closed while police investigated. A handful of apartments in the 200 block of the road were also roped off by officers.

The incident put neighbors on edge, who said this isn't the first shooting at the housing complex.

"You lock your doors. You lock your windows. You go to sleep...I would never want to wake up like that," said neighbor Stephanie O'Neill.

Although it was a scary incident, resident Erica Del Rio said she's more concerned for the victims.

"It's really unfortunate. It's so sad and I can only imagine what the family feels like or even their closer neighbors, said Del Rio.

Police said they continue to process the scene for evidence.

Detectives said they are pursuing several leads. They emphasized that the investigation is very active.
