WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A male construction worker died after authorities said he was hit by a backhoe and landed in the back of a dump truck filled with asphalt in New Haven on Tuesday.

Police said the incident happened when crews from "Pereira and Sons" were working on a sewer project on Boston Post Road right along the West Haven border around noon.

They were 30 minutes away from completing the project.

"It is a reputable company," West Haven Mayor Ed O'Brien said. "They do a lot of work for the city of West Haven."

The unidentified man was taken to a local hospital and died.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration was called to investigate the incident.

Route 1, which also known as Boston Post Road, is closed near Ella Grasso Boulevard line for the investigation. The area could be closed for several hours and could impact the evening commute.

Police are still investigating, but at this point are calling this a workplace accident.

"Our hearts go out to the victims family and friends and coworkers," New Haven Police assistant chief Achilles Generoso said. "I think we have to rally around them now."

Multiple calls to the Pereira and Sons Construction were not returned. The construction company is not listed with OSHA or the Secretary of the State.
