Police are investigating the sexual assault of a woman at gunpoint at a popular park in New Haven on Thursday morning.
Investigators said the sexual assault was not random. The victim was picked by the suspect in the Fair Haven section of the city and then, police said she was driven to East Rock Park.
The woman was first assaulted in the lower parking lot at East Rock Park on the Hamden side, according to police. The second time the woman was sexually assaulted between the parking lot and the summit.
The woman told police that the suspect drove her to the Fair Haven neighborhood after the sexual assault.
Police were seen taking pictures and picking up evidence markers early Thursday morning.
"We saw all these cars coming up, was curious as to why, went on the news and there was some investigation," said New Haven resident Caroline Salgado, who visiting the park.
Police said the suspect is not facing kidnapping charges because of the victim went into the man's car willingly.
Police have not put out a description of the suspect. The incident remains under investigation.
"I feel safe here, but I was thinking, maybe they should put in, like the college campuses have those blue lights with the buttons,"Jeremy Szibowski, of New Britain, said. "Maybe they should put those in the park in case there is ever an emergency, hit a button, maybe that would help."
While visitors to the park, said they always feel safe, they added even if the attack wasn't random, it's making them more aware of their surroundings.
"Now, I don't know if we would come up here walking, especially when it starts to get dark," Reyna Tlecuitl, of West Haven, said.
