Police have identified the two crash victims who died Sunday after being stopped for speeding in Rocky Hill.
They said 27-year-old driver Nelson Viera of East Hartford and his 21-year-old passenger, Iran Brugueras Jr. of Hartford died after they sped away from the traffic stop.
Police said they stopped Viera's rented vehicle after witnessing him speed by the intersection of Maple Street and Gilbert Avenue. An officer reported seeing the vehicle cross the center yellow line.
The officer activated his lights and siren.
Viera initially pulled over a short distance away from Maple Street.
When the officer approached on foot, however, Viera sped off, according to police.
Investigators said he crashed the vehicle on Gilbert Avenue just south of Elm Street.
Both occupants in the rented 2014 Toyota were killed.
Police said Viera had a record of previous arrests and a pending case from April in which he was out on a $150,000 bond.
Officers said the crash is being reconstructed and remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Rocky Hill Police Department at 860-258-7640.
