Authorities identify man who died after being pulled out of Killingly Pond

KILLINGLY, CT (WFSB) -

State officials have identified the 28-year-old man, who died after he was recovered from a pond in Killingly on Thursday afternoon. 

Jerry Wayne Johnson of Melbourne, Florida,  was swimming with his friend at Killingly Pond off of Route 101 around 12:45 p.m. 

Police said Johnson swam out to 150 feet to rock formation. However, Johnson was unable to make it to rock formation and went underwater.

The friend called 911 and rescue boats were put into the water.

Johnson was pulled from the water around 2:30 p.m. Johnson was taken to Day Kimball Hospital where police said he died. 

The Windham County Dive Team worked with firefighters and state police searching for the missing adult. Officials from Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Conservation Police were also called to scene.  

The incident remains under investigation.
