TORRINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

The driver of an SUV was seriously injured late Friday night after his vehicle went off the roadway and rolled down an embankment.

State Police responded to Route 8 southbound in Torrington near exit 45 around 11:30 p.m. after reports the vehicle had struck the guidewire and then rolled down the embankment.

When police arrived they found the Jeep on its roof and the driver of the vehicle outside the car near the passenger side unresponsive.

Police said the vehicle went off the highway and onto the grass median for an unknown reason, from there it struck the guidewire damaging over 300 feet of it before finally rolling over.

The driver, who police have identified as 28-year-old Joshua Jefferis of Winsted, was taken to Hartford Hospital by a Life Star helicopter.  He has since been upgraded to stable condition, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
