Police: Man tried to get 12-year-old bike rider into his SUV in Hamden

HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

A man was arrested for trying to get a 12-year-old girl into his vehicle in Hamden.

Police said Michael Roberts, 47, of Meriden, was taken into custody after the incident on June 21.

They said the girl was riding her bicycle in the area of High Top Circle and Midhill Drive when a man driving a black Chevrolet Blazer approached her.

The man told her to get inside the SUV.

When she refused, the driver fled the area.

Police said they saw the vehicle in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Church Street. They stopped the SUV.

Roberts initially told police that he didn't speak with any children; however, he changed his story to "telling the girl to stay away from power tools."

Police found that Roberts has an extensive criminal record.

He was arrested an charged with risk of injury to a minor and held on a $1,500 bond.

Roberts was scheduled to face a judge in Meriden on July 6.
