A man in Hamden was arrested following an argument that turned into a threat with a rifle.
Police said 61-year-old Brett Smith was involved in a verbal dispute with a woman at their apartment on State Street Sunday.
They said they were called to the home around 7:30 p.m. following a report that someone fired upon motor vehicles.
Smith had entered the apartment following the argument and returned holding a rifle, according to police.
The woman told investigators that Smith pointed the rifle at her and her 26-year-old son.
She also said Smith fired two shots, one that struck a parked vehicle and the other was in the air.
Police said Smith did not fire the rifle at them.
When officers arrived, they said they had to negotiate with the suspect because he locked himself in a bedroom.
He came out a short time later and was arrested.
Officers said they seized two firearms and the loaded rifle.
Smith was charged with reckless endangerment, two counts of breach of peace, two counts of second-degree threatening and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
He was held on a $5,000 bond and faced a judge in Meriden on Monday.
