SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) -

For residents nearby 181 Malcein Drive in Southington, a blighted house is more than an eyesore. Neighbors say the blighted home is driving down property values in the neighborhood.

"It's a problem for everyone in the neighborhood,” said neighbor Lauren Klein. “There's people trying to sell houses and it's just not helping them."

Overgrown grass, absent gutters, and shattered glass strewn across the driveway completes the image of the abandoned house, which according to public records is owned by Brett and Karen Downs.

"You see the whole neighborhood.  It's well-kept and that's just the one house that's not kept,” said Klein.

According to public documents obtained by Eyewitness News, one of the owners, Brett Downs is currently serving a sentence for first degree robbery.

Eyewitness News requested a comment from Clear Spring Loan Service out of Dallas, Texas -- the plaintiff in the foreclosure action, but received no comment.

Eyewitness News also requested a comment from the Southington Town Manager, but to no avail.

"We just hope it can get solved and maybe a new owner can come in and fix it up," said Klein.
