MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Connecticut State Police were called to more than 300 crashes this Fourth of July weekend, which was almost double the year before.

There were 315 crashes including 45 with injured parties and two deadly between just after midnight on July 1 to just before midnight on July 4.

A person was killed in a multiple-car crash on Interstate 95 in East Haven on Saturday. Adriana Catana, 68, died in a crash that involved six vehicles on the northbound side of I-95 between exits 51 and 52. Police said Trumbull resident Catana was a passenger in the fifth car, which then hit a cement barrier.

Police said a second person died on I-95 in Westbrook on Sunday. Westbrook resident Matthew Dorio, 20, died when he was struck by a vehicle while walking on the northbound side of I-95 between exits 65 and 66 around 2 a.m.

Both crashes remain under investigation by state police. There's no word on charges.

Eyewitness News a ride along with a state trooper and saw what they encountered on the roads this holiday.

Law enforcement focuses “on aggressive/reckless drivers, distracted drivers, speeders, seatbelt violations and intoxicated drivers” this holiday weekend. Police said there were “sobriety checkpoints and targeted DUI patrols” in place all weekend.

Troopers used “both traditional and non-traditional patrol cars” to make 39 arrests while driving under the influence. This total was more than last year where they were 33 DUI arrests.

Troopers handed out 1227 speeding citations and 2913 other hazardous moving violation tickets. Last year, troopers handed out 859 speeding tickets and 2,461 other hazardous moving violation tickets.
