Heat, high humidity on tap for Thursday - WFSB 3 Connecticut

Heat, high humidity on tap for Thursday

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday was officially the hottest day of the year, so far.

As of 3:30 p.m., Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks reached 95 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Cooling centers that open up will be listed here.

The last time the state saw weather this hot was on May 29.

In order to have an official heat wave, Connecticut must see three consecutive days of highs at 90 degrees and above.

"We did not come anywhere close to record highs today. The record high for July 6th for the Greater Hartford Area is 102 degrees, set in 2010. The record high for Bridgeport is 98 degrees, also set in 2010," said Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest.

Wednesday night will be warm and muggy, but thunderstorms are not a concern.

The air will turn more humid for Thursday, which could be this week's second consecutive day in the 90s.

Most of the day should be partly to mostly sunny.

"Temperatures will likely exceed 90 degrees tomorrow and the humidity will be higher. Dew point temperatures will rise close to 70 degrees, which is borderline oppressive," DePrest said.

There could be a few thunderstorms that may pop up on Thursday during the afternoon. DePrest said they will be hit or miss, so many towns will stay dry.

The heat wave could become official on Friday with another shot at 90 degrees. However, how high temperatures go will depend on the location of a back door cold front.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Saturday with the arrival of a cold front. Temps should rise into the 80s. The air will be quite humid as well.

The front departs on Saturday night.
