BRANFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Multiple people were injured, some critically after a motor vehicle crash involving a box truck on Interstate 95 in Branford on Monday afternoon.

The crash involving seven vehicles was reported on the southbound side of I-95 between Exits 54 and 53 after a crash around 1:30 p.m.

"We had multiple injured parties, some of whom were critically injured, trapped in their vehicles," Branford Deputy Fire Chief Michael Stackpole said in a statement on Monday.

Branford firefighters along with the East Haven Fire Department worked to extricate people from the vehicles.

“It took our crews nearly 25 minutes to extricate one of the seriously injured pediatric patients from the vehicle she was riding in,” Stackpole said.

Ambulances from Branford Fire Department and American Medical Response took the patients to area hospitals. In total, total seven patients were rushed to the hospital while four others refused medical treatment at the scene of the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by Connecticut State Police.
