A homeless man was arrested in Plainfield after police said he failed to register as a sex offender in Rhode Island.

Police received an emergency call of a “suspicious person” in the Moosup area around 6:15 a.m. Officers located 40-year-old Rene Martel at Cumberland Farms, which was near the original call.

While officers were talking to Martel, police said he gave them a fake name.

Police determined that Martel failed to register as a sex offender for multiple counts.  He was charged with second-degree failure to appear, criminal impersonation, and as a fugitive from justice.

Martel also had an outstanding warrant in Connecticut for failure to appear.

Martel is being held on $200,000 bond. He is expected to be arraigned at Danielson Superior Court on Friday.
