Motorcyclist dies after crash in Bristol

BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

A motorcyclist died after a motor vehicle crash in Bristol on Friday afternoon. 

South Street is closed between East and Downs streets after a crash involving a dump truck and motorcycle was reported around 2 p.m. 

Bristol Police said a motorcycle being operated by 49-year-old Raymond Smith of Wallingford collided with a garbage truck owned by CWPM Waste Management.  The driver of the truck, 31-year-old Robert Choinski of New Britain, was not injured.

Smith and his passenger, 41-year-old Allison Vandermaelan of Wallingford, were both rushed to Bristol Hospital.

Police said Smith passed away from his injuries a short time later.

Vandermaelan suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by a Life Star helicopter to Hartford Hospital where she is listed in grave condition.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team.  Police are asking any witnesses to the crash to contact Officer Kosiba at 860-584-3505.
