The driver of the SUV that slammed into a utility pole in Vernon early Saturday morning has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
Vernon police said the accident happened on Route 83 between Dobson Road and Sunset Terrace around 3 a.m.
Route 83 is expected to be closed for several hours after the crash took out a utility pole and several wires. Police said after striking the utility pole, the SUV then rolled over at least once before coming to a final rest along the woods off the roadway.
Police said the driver, 21 year old Luke Edwards of Madison, was initially found unconscious and first responding officers noticed he appeared to be suffering from an overdose. A dose of Narcan was administered to the driver which helped bring him around, police said.
Edwards was alert when he was taken to the Hartford Hospital by a Life Star helicopter for treatment, police said. He was placed under arrest by officers in his hospital bed and charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain a lane. Police said he was released on a $500 bond and will appear in court later this month.
Police expect the road to remain closed for an extended period of time and are urging drivers to seek alternate routes.
