Police have identified the two people killed in a head-on crash in North Branford on Monday morning.
The crash, which involved two vehicles, happened on Foxon Road, also known as Route 80, just after 5:15 a.m.
Police said they had to extricate both drivers, 67-year-old John Fragola, of Killingworth, and 51-year-old Mario Simmons, of North Branford, from the vehicles.
Fragola and Simmons were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital where police said they were pronounced dead.
No one else was hurt and there were no other people in the cars.
Police said, at the time of the crash, the sun wasn’t high enough to make glare a likely factor in the crash. Speed is being considered a factor, according to investigators.
"It’s tragic and its really frightening," Nicole Stimpson, who lives near the crash scene, said. "We're very cautious. It’s a busy road especially with the kids and stuff.”
A portion of Foxon Road was shut down between Forest and Caputo Roads in both directions for several hours. The road reopened around noon.
The crash is under investigation by the South Central Regional Traffic Unit. Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call the North Branford Police Department at 203- 484-2703.
