A little girl from Hartford suffers from a severe form of scoliosis, the same condition as a famous dolphin.
On Monday, police said they helped 10-year-old Danializ Marquez, of Hartford, get on her way to meet the mammal and inspiration for the movie Dolphin Tale.
Scoliosis is a condition that causes the spine to curve to the side. Scoliosis caused her to undergo 22 surgeries.
According to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Winter, the dolphin in Dolphin Tale, got her tail stuck in a net. Doctors had to amputate the tail and a couple of vertebrae. As a result, Winter developed a form of scoliosis for dolphins.
“It doesn’t have a tail, and it has scoliosis like I do," Danializ said.
Despite overwhelming odds, she healed and even developed a new swim pattern with the use of prosthetics, according to the aquarium.
“I think knowing that a dolphin needs a tale to get through life it teaches her to never give up," Danializ's sister Sirimarie Marquess said.
Police said Danializ relates to Winter's condition and it was her wish to meet the famous dolphin.
“My heart is beating so fast," Danializ said.
Danializ and her family left from Hartford for Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida. Hartford officers escorted her from Wadsworth Street around 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
“It’s a win for everyone involved and we certainly thank Make-a-Wish, but it’s good for our officers to be involved in such a good thing," Hartford Police Deputy Chief Brian Foley said.
Danializ will visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium with her family on Tuesday where she will finally meet Winter. Danializ said she hope to have the chance to swim with Winter while she's there.
