'Hazmat situation' closes road in Higganum

HIGGANUM, CT (WFSB) -

State police are investigating a hazmat situation at a home in the Higganum section of Haddam on Monday morning.  

Detectives of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force conducted a "narcotics-related investigation" at home at 34 Ponsett Rd. Upon arrival, police located "unknown chemicals" inside the residence. 

The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Emergency Response Unit assisted Connecticut State Police with "chemical identification, sampling and waste disposal" at the residence.  

Ponsett Road was closed because of the police investigation. 

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that they are assisting the Connecticut State Police. State police said the State Police Bomb Squad and Drug Enforcement Administration also assisted with the investigation. 

A couple staying at the home told Eyewitness News they were doing some work on the home when they a problem with the water heater. 

Everyone inside the home was evacuated, but were allowed back in around 3:30 p.m.
