Police said the callers tell people they're from the Internal Revenue Service and that back taxes are owed. The only way to avoid arrest is to pay immediately through Western Union or with iTunes gift cards.
Police said residents have fallen victim to the scam.
Police requested that folks remind friends and relatives who might be at risk of falling victim to the callers. They recommended always independently verifying callers who demand payment over the phone.
Police said the IRS does not solicit payment over the phone and certainly does not accept gift cards as a form of payment. When in doubt, police urged potential victims to give them a call.
