On Thursday afternoon, Naugatuck police responded to reports of a domestic dispute where shots had been fired.
The incident happened on Washington Street.
Police said the victim was shot in the back and suffered non-life threatening injuries. The female victim identified the shooter as her estranged husband, James Michael Batista.
The suspect fled the scene.
Hours later, New Haven police were notified that the suspect was being searched for in the city.
Batista's car was found on West Street in New Haven.
When he saw officers, he stopped the car. A police SUV collided with Batista's car.
While he was in the car, police said Batista shot himself in the head.
He is in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Connecticut State Police Major Crime has been contacted and will be assisting Naugatuck Police with the investigation.
