In the winter, there's a checklist to follow to keep your vehicle in pristine order like checking on brakes and air pressure in tires.

The heat, however, can put just as much stress on a vehicle, according to experts.

Mechanics said the last thing drivers want to do is ignore their vehicle. It could lead to being left stranded or at the least serious repairs.

Modern Tire and Auto service manager Joseph Fiumara said there's a sizable checklist to get a vehicle in shape for the heat. He said just like with the human body, it starts with fluids.

"You need to make sure that your coolant is ok in your vehicle," he said. "It's serviced every two years.”

Without the coolant system working properly, the air conditioner won't do the job.

Patricia Gill of East Hartford said she's due for an oil change and will have all of the fluids checked, like the coolant.

"I love my A/C," she said.

Testing the battery is another important step as the state embarks on what could be a lengthy heat wave. Fiumara said batteries could die at any time.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellent said drivers should also pay attention to:

  • Drive belts
  • Oil
  • Tire pressure
  • Brakes

The age of the vehicle has little bearing, according to Fiumara.

"Whether they are new or old, they’re just as critical," he said. "Absolutely it’s very important to do those checks to make sure you're ready for the summer time trip.”
