A man from Norwalk faces child abuse charges after a 2-year-old child was found to have serious injuries.
Police said Pedro Salinas, 31, was arrested at the Norwalk Courthouse Thursday where he was appearing for an unrelated case.
The department's Special Victims Unit said it began an investigation on May 26 after receiving a report from the Department of Children and Families.
Detectives found that the 2-year-old girl had been brought to Norwalk Hospital after suffering from what at the time was believed to be a medical condition.
The child was later transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital due to the seriousness of her condition.
Detectives later learned that the child had been living with family at Salinas' home.
They also learned that Salinas had assaulted the child, which caused serious injuries.
The extent of the assaults and the injuries were not disclosed.
Police said based on the results of their investigation, a warrant was issued for Salinas.
He was charged with first-degree assault, cruelty to persons and risk of injury to a minor.
His bond was set at $150,000.
