New Haven police said a Naugatuck man died after he shot his estranged wife in the back Thursday afternoon.
Officials said they responded to a domestic incident on Washington Street in Naugatuck around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Responders found a woman who had been shot in the back. The woman identified the shooter as her estranged husband, James Batista, 28.
The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Police began to search for Batista and found him in New Haven driving from West Street toward Congress Avenue.
Batista stopped his car when he spotted police. A police vehicle collided with the car when it stopped.
Police said that while seated inside the car, Batista shot himself.
He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital.
Batista died early Friday afternoon.
New Haven Police said they are investigating the collision and Batista's suicide.
The shooting of Batista's wife is also under investigation.
