The daughter of former Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung will address the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night in an emotional speech about gun control.
Erica Smegielski said she never wanted to have to give this kind of speech, but she said she is ready to address the nation in her mom's memory.
"She always had a smile on her face and she was always sarcastic and so funny, honestly just the best person that you could ever hope to meet,” Smegielski said. "When I first learned that my mom was murdered while confronting the gunman, at first I was angry and I think it took me a couple of months before I could let go of that."
Eventually, she said she decided to throw herself into advocating for what she calls “common sense gun violence prevention.”
On Wednesday, she will bring her message to the main stage at the DNC Convention.
“The fact that we see tragedy, after tragedy, after tragedy and the daily toll of gun violence in our country...the fact that I have to be here is disgusting,” Smegielski said.
She is scheduled to take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. She said she believes her mom would be proud.
"I think the best way to sum up how my mom would be feeling right now is actually in her own words. In my college graduation card she wrote ‘my sweet baby girl, you now have your hard earned opportunity to change the world, and I’m living up to that…mom’,” Smegielski said.
Senator Chris Murphy will also address the DNC crowd on Wednesday night as well.
