SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) -

Two people were injured in a crash that closed Interstate 84 in Southington for several hours on Thursday morning.

The three-car crash involving a tractor trailer was reported on the westbound side of I-84 at exit 31 at around 9 a.m.

Waterbury resident Joanna Mccarthy, 26, was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elanlra Gls on the eastbound side of I-84 just east of exit 30 when police said she left the roadway. Police said Mccarthy's vehicle traveled through the grass median into the westbound travel lane and crashed into a 2011 Dodge Ram truck.

After the crash, police said the impact caused the rear end of truck to crashed into a tractor-trailer.

Mccarthy suffered "serious, life-threatening injuries" and was rushed to Hartford Hospital by LIFE STAR medical helicopter. New Britain resident David M. Elward, who was driving the Dodge Ram truck, was taken to Hartford Hospital with "suspected injuries," police said.

The tractor-trailer driver did not report any injuries to police.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Any with any information about the crash is asked to call state police at 860-534-1000.
