Salvation Army employee is more than a receptionist

Leandra Garcia, 21, is not just a receptionist at the Salvation Army of greater Hartford, she's also a teacher, a mentor, a singer, a musician, and an inspiration to all those who meet her.

This week, the Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad did something special for Garcia, who is always giving back to others in a very special way.

“She feels for the people; and when you have that kind of empathy for the people that you serve you really look at them in a different light I think,” said Garcia’s co-worker Patricia Wood, who contacted the SurPRIZE Squad.

Garcia just signed a lease for her first apartment, and is in need of some items.

The SurPRIZE Squad helped her out with that, and some extra spending money.

Garcia was shocked by the surprise.

“Coming here as a child, it was more of a safe haven and a family; now working here it's my way of giving back to people and giving them the same thing,” Garcia said.

She also had some advice to those who are struggling.

“Just don't give up. There's more in life out there, even if you're struggling, just never give up,” Garcia said.
