MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Silver Sands State Park beach in Milford reopened on Friday after the water was tested for bacteria.

DEEP announced the closure of three state park beaches on Wednesday, including the one at Silver Sands. Local officials in Stratford also said their Short Beach was closed for similar reasons.

Only Silver Sands was still closed on Thursday.

The reason for the beach closures was high levels of indicator bacteria in the water.

DEEP said it doesn't happen often to beaches along Long Island Sound, but it's the recent rain for the elevated bacteria levels. The heavy rain causes runoff.

Red flags have been posted at the affected areas to alert beach goers. However, some ignored the warning on Wednesday.

DEEP said testing continues at various beaches and ponds, but all swimming areas were open on Friday.
