VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

In the wake of the home explosion and collapse in Vernon on Thursday, there's been an outpouring of support from friends and neighbors who wanted to do their part to help the victims.

Churches, clothing banks, schools and restaurants have been inquiring about what they can do to help.

"The neighbors all across the street, everyone's trying to pitch in and see what they can do for one another," said Laura Prouty, a neighbor.

Neighbors on E. Street gathered to come up with a plan to help the family, which may have nothing left. Their home was reduced to rubble.

"There's four kids and they definitely will need everything," Prouty said.

A GoFundMe fundraising webpage has been set up for 35-year-old Nicole Kerstetter and her family. People immediately contributed money and posted goof wishes.

Donor Trish Buchanan wrote "sending love and healing, hugs [to] Nicole and family."

"We did pretty well, didn't get everything," said Christine Filanowicz, director, Clothing Bank Etc. "They certainly still need more. We're gonna provide them with the back packs and school supplies for school."

Filanowicz said Friday morning, family members came in to gather clothes for the victims since they literally escaped with the clothes on their backs.

"So they all came in there, all took a name and they fulfilled kind of the sizes according to that name," she said. "They took about five bags out of here."

Organizers said the family still needs socks, underwear, t-shirts and shoes. The Clothing Bank said it is readily accepting the items on the family's behalf.

The clothing bank is located on Prospect Street in Vernon and its phone number is 860-870-0500.

The items needed for the family include:

  • CLOTHING SIZE 16 LADIES
  • LADIES SIZE LARGE TOPS
  • MEN'S 38/32 PANTS
  • MEN'S 36/32 PANTS
  • CLOTHES BOY SIZE 8-10
  • CLOTHES BOY SIZE 10-12
  • LADIES SIZE MEDIUM SHIRTS
  • LADIES SIZE 7 1/2 SHOES
  • SOCKS, UNDERWEAR, T-SHIRTS, TANK TOPS, PAJAMAS

Organizers asked that all bags be marked "Ketstetter family" and that all the different sizes be placed in separate bags.

They said there is a drop off bin at the clothing bank.

Vernon Public Schools will also be accepting donations for the victims. They should be dropped off during business hours in the main office of the schools.
