WINDSOR LOCKS, CT (WFSB) -
Plans to build a third casino in Connecticut are not moving along as quickly as some expected and MGM claims those plans are moving in the wrong direction.
MGM was told they can't build another casino in Connecticut and they are not too happy about that decision. They are blasting the Connecticut Airport Authority and said big things are being planned that people don't know about.
Connecticut is trying to save jobs and create revenue, which is why state lawmakers approved a plan to allow two tribes to build a third casino near the Massachusetts border. The goal is to keep casino business in Connecticut once a new gaming facility in Springfield opens.
The plan all along was to build something on a much smaller scale than Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, but MGM said that's not the case.
At a hearing earlier this year, MGM argued for documents on plans to build a casino at Bradley International Airport to be released and they were successful in their attempt. MGM officials said the drawings show plans for a mega casino.
Windsor Locks First Selectman Chris Kervick was asked if he thinks the criticism by MGM against the CT airport authority is valid.
"To be frank I am not even sure I Understand their criticism,” Kervick said. “It seems like they're critical there hasn't been any transparency about an agreement, but there is not agreement and there hasn't been an agreement."
Kervick said the town has spoken with the Connecticut Airport Authority, but nothing more than that. In fact, those plans, which were done in conjunction with a transportation center, are no longer being considered.
The bottom line is any plan for a new casino must be approved by the legislature.
Kervick said it’s pretty much a moot point. The Connecticut Airport Authority, however has stronger language said “this desperate attempt at fear-mongering is just another chapter in MGM’s increasingly alarming track record of distorting the truth to protect its business interests."
MGM is currently building a casino in neighboring Springfield and a Connecticut casino close-by would hurt their business.
Kervick said he wants to make sure whatever is built includes jobs, more police and fire services---and taxes for the town.
“I want as much information as possible, so that the board of selectmen and citizens of Windsor Locks can make an informed decision about this issue,” Kervick said.
Currently, there are two sites in Windsor Locks being considered, one includes another site at the airport. Hartford and East Hartford are also interested.
