As heat and humidity rises, cooling centers open up

AVON, CT (WFSB) -

Due to the heat and humidity, several cities and towns opened cooling centers. 

Here are the locations: 

Bloomfield

  • The Alvin & Beatrice Wood Human Services Center, 330 Park Ave.,  9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
  • The Bloomfield Municipal Pool, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
  • Prosser Library,1 Tunxis Ave., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on  Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
  • McMahon Wintonbury Library, 1015 Blue Hills Ave., 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on  Tuesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday

Glastonbury

  • Riverfront Community Center Cooling Center, 300 Wells St., 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday

Hartford

  • Parker and Arroyo Recreation Centers: noon to 4 p.m. 
  • Public Pools: noon to 6 p.m. 

Middletown

  • Municipal Building Council Chamber, 245 deKoven Dr., Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.
  • Middletown Police Department lobby, 222 Main St., open 24 hours a day
  • The Russell Library, 123 Broad St., Monday and Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesday 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Elderly persons are advised to utilize the Senior Center, 61 Durant Terrace, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Transportation to the cooling center at City Hall can be arranged by calling Middletown Area Transit (MAT) at 860-346-0212 (ext. 2) from 1 p.m. until 6:15 p.m.

Middletown Fire, South Fire District and Westfield Fire District will be opening fire hydrants starting on Friday, August 11, 2016, at the following locations and during the following times:

•The Highlands Crescent Drive bus stop from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

•Maplewood Terrace from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

•Summer Hill Road and Woodbury Circle from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

•MacDonough School from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

•Santangelo Circle from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.

•Daddario Road from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Simsbury

  • Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St., Monday to Thursday: 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 
  • Eno Memorial Hall, 754 Hopmeadow St., Monday 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Torrington

  • City Hall Auditorium, 140 Main St., 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday
  • Torrington Health and Rehab, 225 Wyoming Ave., Seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Sullivan Senior Center, 88 East Albert St., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for senior citizens only
