A 36-year-old man died after a street sweeper rollover off Interstate 91 in New Haven on Thursday afternoon.
State police said Christopher M. Ruiz, of Bridgeport, was driving on the southbound side of I-91 near the exit 6 off-ramp around 1:15 p.m. when police said he lost control of the vehicle.
When Ruiz lost control of the vehicle, police said the street sweeper rolled over on Willow Street. The impact of the crash caused Ruiz to be ejected from the street sweeper and he became trapped under the vehicle's right side.
"When we got to the top of the ramp we saw the truck was completely flipped over. A light pole was down and we turned he corner and saw that the driver was pinned underneath," eyewitness Jane Erfe said. "Just his legs were out from underneath the truck. It was really frightening to see."
Ruiz was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where police said he died from injuries in the crash.
The crash closed I-91 near exit 6 for a few hours, police said.
