HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

Crews responded to a house fire on the third floor of 75 Beacon St in Hamden on Sunday afternoon.

Due to the extreme heat and humidity, firefighters struggled to control the fire, said Hamden Fire Chief, David Berardesca, in a release.

As a result, one fire lieutenant was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital and is expected to be released on Sunday evening.

The fire was knocked and the occupants were safely evacuated. Firefighters contained the fire to the third floor and the rear of the attic, said Berardesca.

The third floor sustained the most damage, while the second floor sustained moderate water damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
