HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Tax-free week kicked on Sunday and will go through next Saturday.

This time of the year can be expensive between the school supplies and new clothes. Parents use this time of year to do some back-to-school shopping and maximize their savings.

Clothes and shoes under $100 are exempt from the state's 6.35 percent sales tax. Larger retailers said they do see an increase in sales and just more people coming through the doors, typically parents looking to save as much as possible.

"The tax-free on top of it definitely helps out," William Fenlon, who is the manager at the Walmart in Hartford, said. "It gets additional people into the store, school uniforms, everything that we have at this point in time that sell really well. People really do come in looking for that."

Shoppers can feel free to use any discounts they come across on items that are more than the $100 cap.

Some parents told Eyewitness News they do scout out the best deals before heading out to reduce stress.
