NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

One person was killed in a five-vehicle crash in New Haven Thursday morning, according to state police.

The crash involved a box truck and a FedEx tractor trailer, according to troopers.

State police identified the victim as Joel Gemme, 38, of Enfield.

Troopers were called to the scene on I-91 South at exit 4, the Trumbull Street exit, around 4 a.m.

They said Gemme's vehicle side-swiped two others, then rear-ended a fourth vehicle.

Gemme's vehicle lost a wheel at that point and struck the fifth vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drivers in two of the other vehicles were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital with minor injuries.

Significant backups were reported in that area.

State police said only the right lane was open. A 2-mile delay was reported as of 6:30 a.m.

As of 10 a.m. the highway was cleared.

Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at 203-393-4200.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
